Europe Beer Run Update

Europe Beer Run Update

A week ago, on a whim, I booked myself a ticket to Europe. In particular, to visit Dublin, Munich, Frankfurt and Prague. As usual, I used my United miles to book the business class ticket across the pond with four stops in Europe for 100,000 miles and under $300. Dublin because I have never been to Ireland and many of my travel blogging friends were in town for another TBEX conference. Munich was the main reason I went – to visit my third Oktoberfest in the row. Frankfurt and Prague were added to see friends and check out a new […]

Thrill of Booking Award Tickets – Breaking the Rules

Thrill of Booking Award Tickets - Breaking the Rules

This is the last post of the series where I walk you through how exciting it could get when we book an award ticket using airline frequent flier miles. I spelled out why I do it in Part 1, along with some awesome itineraries I have booked before. Part 2 and Part 3 explained the rules and techniques for booking award travel. In Part 4 I invited you to tag along as I searched for and booked my latest ticket to Europe. Then in Part 5 I showed you how I stretched that ticket beyond what even I thought was […]

Thrill of Booking Award Tickets – Stretching It Further

Thrill of Booking Award Tickets - Stretching It Further

Last week I showed you some of the awesome itineraries I booked with airline miles, the rules, and even some step-by-step instructions. After that, we walked through my latest ticket – how I was getting to visit Oslo, Bergen, Rome, and Barcelona all for the price of a simple round-trip ticket. To recap – a round-trip award ticket from US to Europe costs 60,000 miles in Economy or 100,000 miles in Business class. Instead, I got this awesome itinerary in Business class for the same 100,000 miles: I was killing two birds with one stone here – attending Chris Guillebeau’s End […]

Thrill of Booking Award Tickets – My Latest Itinerary

Thrill of Booking Award Tickets - My Latest Itinerary

After teasing you with some crazy flight itineraries in Part 1, going over some of the rules for award travel booking in Part 2, and walking you through the techniques I use in Part 3,  today I invite you join me as I was boarding the emotional roller coaster of actually searching for and booking my latest masterpiece itinerary. Original Goal At the beginning, there were two things I wanted to accomplish with this itinerary – attend Chris Guillebeau’s (The Art of Nonconformity, The $100 Startup) End of the World party in Oslo on April 7. We will be celebrating Chris’ accomplishment […]

Thrill of Booking Award Tickets – How To Book

Thrill of Booking Award Tickets - How To Book

You have seen some of the awesome itineraries I have been able to book using award miles in Part 1 of this series. In Part 2 we covered the rules for booking an award trip to Europe on United Airlines. Next, we will walk through the excitement and challenges I faced while booking my latest trip to Europe. But before we do that, I wanted to share the techniques and tricks I use to search for award space availability on United website so you could follow along (and even try it yourself if you are so inclined). Note: in this post […]

Thrill of Booking Award Tickets – The Rules

Thrill of Booking Award Tickets - The Rules

As I have mentioned in Part 1 of this mini series, I get a kick out of booking award tickets. To recap – I amass quite a bit of airline frequent flier bonuses by using my credit wisely (see Free Eurotrip for my Parents) and when it comes to redeeming those miles for free flights, I try to squeeze as much value out of them as I can. As an aviation geek, I love flying on different aircraft and different airlines. As a traveler, I love being able to use some little known tricks to drastically increase the number of […]

Thrill of Booking Award Tickets – Why I Do It

Thrill of Booking Award Tickets - Why I Do It

If you know me even just a bit, you are probably aware that I am crazy about three things – aviation, travel and doing both of those in style while paying just a tiny fraction of what it normally costs. I amass thousands of reward points and frequent flier miles through combination of new credit card sign-up bonuses and some creative spending on those cards. And when the time comes to use the miles to book award tickets, it is hard to describe how excited I get. It is a rush to see how much can I stretch those award tickets. […]
